Adult Forum Current Topics

The Adult Forum is a casual Sunday morning study on a variety of topics, ranging from a study of an area of the Bible or theology to aging, depression, internet safety, etc.   It is held in the fellowship hall for all adults from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.   There is a nursery available for children under three years of age.

Debbie Amato and Dan Johnson will speak on Feed My Starving Children, an agency based in Minneapolis which is committed to feeding God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit. Children and adults hand-pack meals formulated specially for starving children, which are shipped to more than 60 countries around the world. 

October 18 Matt Cesare from Humanitri will speak to us about the programs of this agency which was created in 2006 when three not-for-profit social service agencies, Lutheran Ministries Association, Good Samaritan Service Center and Friend of Moms, merged. As Humanitri, they increase their ability to provide services to people in need.
October 25 Ali Johnson, from Annie’s Hope, will speak about their camp for children who have lost a parent.
November 1 Mignon Murphy from Haven House will come and talk about the dinner ministry that Holy Cross does at Haven House and other ministry opportunities
November 8 Debra Crow from The Bridge at Centenary Methodist Church will discuss the ministry of feeding the homeless everyday at The Bridge.
November 15

Four Thrivent representatives will be speaking on Social Security, Estate Planning, and Charitable Giving/Passing along to heirs or charities. Marc Nolan, Mike Nolan, Brent Stanley, and Dane Werner will lead a discussion and answer your questions regarding these and other issues pertaining to investments, tax wise planning, long term care for you or your parents, etc. It’s never too early or too late to start planning!

November 22

Jan Gannon, from Soaring Spirit Ministries, will be sharing how this prison ministry is “Healing broken lives through Jesus Christ” and how you can impact a woman’s life by just giving ten minutes of your time per month for only six months.

December 6

Mardi Manary, from Gethsemane ELCA St. Louis, shares her personal story about how she, a nurse, and her husband, a doctor, started “Project Peanut Butter” after seeing first hand the swollen bellies of starving children in Africa. Learn how they scientifically made a formula using peanut butter to get the needed nutrients to starving children around the world.

Video: In God’s Name was presented last December on CBS. It features around ten prominent heads of churches around the world. Bishop Hansen of the ELCA is one of those leaders featured. Facilitated by Pastor Schack.

Rev. Karthik Sibanyanam - Pastor Karthik Sibanyanam, former pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malaysia (ELM) for 7 years, is now working on his Master’s degree at Concordia Seminary and has been participating in the life of St. Mark’s in Clayton. He has a moving story of Christian conversion which happened as he was preparing to become a Hindu priest

The Church Council will discuss the current issues in the church and answer any questions on the proposed budget.

February 1

Nicki Reynolds, parish nurse for Atonement Lutheran Church, will explain how parish nursing started at Atonement, and what all encompasses this particular ministry for the members of Atonement and the community. She will also discuss how parish ministry is funded at Atonement.

On Being A Lutheran! Why are we Lutherans and not Presbyterians or Roman Catholics? What do Lutherans believe, or should it be who? What about the Bible, its formation, contents, and believability? What about the Book of Concord? Ever heard of it and what’s it all about? These are some of the questions we’ll be discussing in the adult forum led by Pastor Herb Hohenstein on three Sundays in February. Come join us!

Dr. Ben Asen will be with us in the Adult Forum for three weeks, beginning today. His topic is Satan and Violence in the Bible. This series of classes will explore the origins of Satan and in the Old and New Testaments, as well as address the problem of violence in the Bible and in contemporary society. Numerous biblical texts about Satan and violence will be examined and discussed.

House of Hope is a stateside organization that gives aid to the House of Hope Orphanage that is located in Haiti. This orphanage houses 26 girls. They have helped in the building of Patty’s School and will soon be breaking ground for a new clinic. Carl and Carol Vorst will be with us to explain the workings of this organization.

March 29 Sara Hoffstot will be with us to discuss the stress involved with our current economic conditions.  Job loss, loss of finances, loss of retirement and loss of self worth can cause stress and depression. Sara is a counselor and psychologist in the Creve Coeur area.
April 5

Palm Sunday - Video: Journeying with Jesus.  This is a brand new production that takes us through the greatest story ever told.  It is narrated by David Nunn.  The film features the latest archeological discoveries and insights they provide.  For all ages.

In the Book of Genesis we are reminded that we have the responsibility to be "guardians of the earth." We will study the biblical texts pertaining to the care of God's creation, and in particular our earth. Some of those texts we will consider are: Genesis 1-2, Job 38, Psalms, John 1, and Romans 8.V

Sept 7 Dr. Ben Asen, Associate Professor in the Department of Theological Studies at St. Louis University will be with us. The title of his series is From Chaos to Creation: a study of the Genesis creation stories, their context, content and theological message.

October 7

Our study, Understanding the Bible, will be undertaken in three sessions.
The first session will deal with biblical authority. The second session will deal with the various critical aspects of understanding how the Bible was written and can be interpreted in our times. The third session will deal with how we can effectively read the Scriptures as a lay person. There are many factors which affect our understanding of God's Word. Often we absence ourselves from reading the Bible because the various interpretations seem to counter each other. Hopefully, we will be enabled to read the Bible for inspiration and insight as we deal with the issues in our class

Melba Bangert, Vice President of the Central States Synod will bring us news of the work being done by our Synod.

Paula O’Donnell will give us an overview of Disaster Preparedness Training for the whole family. Come find out what every home should not be without and how to “stay ahead of the storm”.  Paula O’Donnell will lead the training as taught to her over the summer by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the University of Missouri as part of the Faith Based Initiative for Disaster Preparedness.

November 23 "You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Or can you?"  Donna LaVoie will focus on separating fact from fiction about changes in memory and cognition in old age
November 30 Advent Celebration.  This event is for everyone - children and adults! The younger children will be treated to a presentation by puppeteers from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellisville. There will also be crafts, refreshments and music. The 7th -12th grades will make 100+ “candy crackers” to give to the Good Samaritan Center for the Homeless. All adults are welcome to help put up the Sunday school Christmas tree and decorate it. Of course, there will be fellowship and refreshments. Come prepare for Christ’s coming to us on Christmas Day!
December 7 Roger Rose, the Walking Stick Man, will join us to share some wonderful Christmas stories.  Roger is a member of many professional Storytelling Groups

Sunday School will meet in the OLD Fellowship hall by the large screen TV to watch The Legend of the Three Trees, narrated by Hal Holbrook.  Thoughtfully written and beautifully animated, this story teaches children and adults alike the significance of their role in God’s plan for the world.  Adult Forum participants are encouraged to join the Sunday School program in watching for this video.

April 23, 2006 Father Michael Brunner from the St. Louis Abbey was raised Catholic and converted to Islam in his college years.    After 25 years as a Muslim, he became increasingly uncomfortable without Christ in his life and converted back to Catholicism, and went into the monastery.   Father Michael will share his interesting life story as well as insights on life as a Benedictine monk.
